I should never have agreed to pretend Paisley is my girlfriend, because now I wish it was real.
I keep forgetting itâs not.
Watching her scramble over rocks and rubble, cheeks rosy from the exertion, eyes sparkling with mischief, I want to wrap my arms around her and never let go. I want to kiss her until she forgets her own name. I want to wrap her in bubble wrap and take her home with me.
I want too many things that I canât have.
Dinner last night was practically torture. She didnât ask me about my grandmother, and I didnât ask her about what happened to drive her away from a home where sheâs clearly adored. I didnât ask her why she became a secretary instead of a doctor. I didnât badger her at all.
I just enjoyed spending time with her.
She shines like the sun at noon day. Her laughter lifts my heart in a way I didnât know it could lift, like itâs being hauled upward with hundreds of helium balloons.
My phone has been ringing for twenty minutes. I finally roll over and pick it up. After all, what if Paisleyâs calling?
Sheâs not.
Itâs stupid, irritating Cooper. âWhat?â I grumble.
âSomeone is crabby this morning. Ready to fly back to New York yet?â
âWhat do you want?â I ask. âJust tell me.â
âIâve been looking into this whole Blerg debacle.â
âBerg,â I correct him automatically, before I realize heâs probably mocking it.
âRight. Whatever. The point is, once youâre done with your little vacation, I think you need to face the reality that trying to turn this particular company around was as big a mistake as you told me it would be. We need to go back to selling this one off in chunks, because this company isnât dying. Itâs dead. Have you looked at their current contracts? Three more canceled in the past two months, which means they only have two left.â
âI actually think we can fix this,â I say. âI mean, the people are bright and motivated. The plant is in good shape. They just need a new product, and then some solid contracts to produce under.â
âDo you hear yourself?â Cooper asks. âI mean, the contracts and the productâthatâs the entire company. Youâre basically saying the car is good. It just needs a new engine and a new body. Relax Cooper, the transmission is fine. We may as well sell the parts that work and buy a whole new car.â
âLook, Iâve got a lot of contacts and a few ideas for a product that, with a few minor modifications and a few new pieces of equipment, they could manufacture.â
âDude, I know your girlfriend is hot, and if thatâs your reason, thatâs fine. You own this, after all, but if you guys break up, and I feel the odds of that are high, then youâre stuck with a corporate corpse. Her family is totally incapable of managing it, obviously.â
âSo we hire a manager.â
âWho youâll have to fly down to manage yourself. I mean, if you want to relocate to the Alabama of Western Europe to start selling widgets, thatâs your prerogative.
